Feast of the Holy Family

The special devotion which proposes the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as the model of virtue of all Christian households began in the XVIIth century. It started almost simultaneously in Canada and France. -- The Association of the Holy Family being founded in Montreal in 1663, and the Daughters of the Holy Family in Paris in 1674. Numerous other congregations and associations under the Patronage of the Holy Family have been established, since that time, and they are spread over the world. The Archconfraternity was established by Pius IX in 1847. In 1893 Leo XIII approved a feast for Canada, and Pope Benedict XV extended the Feast of the Holy Family to the whole Church and ordered its celebration to be kept on the Sunday after the Epiphany.

THE HOLY FAMILY

GREATER DOUBLE/WHITE

Old Calendar - First Sunday After The Epiphany
Within the Octave

From eternity, the Son of God had lived the family life of the Blessed Trinity. At Nazareth, as the Redeemer both of individuals and of families, He lived and made holy the home life that guards divine life in every baptized person.

Problems of family life center mainly in personalities. But social pressures and poverty also add disturbing tensions. Happily, God made marriage a sacrament, which is ministered by husband and wife to one another. Through the sacrament, they communicate to one another those special graces they need for living their enduring and sometimes difficult obligations.

God remains the third partner in every marriage, with His own inalienable rights. In the Holy Family, God Incarnate was the third member. In a Christian family, anywhere in the world, the father is the spiritual head who takes the place of Christ.

Prayer to the Holy Family

This prayer is taken from Prayer Book for Religious, compiled by Fr. F. X. Lasance, S.J. (Benziger Brothers, 1904)

holyfamilyO most loving Jesus, Who by Thy sublime and beautiful virtues of humility, obedience, poverty, modesty, charity, patience and gentleness, and by the example of Thy domestic life, didst bless with peace and happiness the family Thou didst choose on earth, in Thy clemency look down upon this household, humbly prostrate before Thee and imploring Thy mercy. Remember that this family belongs to Thee; for to Thee we have in a special way dedicated and devoted ourselves. Look upon us in Thy loving kindness; preserve us from danger; give us help in time of need, and grant us the grace to persevere to the end in the imitation of Thy Holy Family; that having revered Thee and loved Thee faithfully on earth, we may bless and praise Thee eternally in heaven.

O Mary, most sweet Mother, to thy intercession we have recourse, knowing that thy Divine Son will hear thy prayers.

And do thou, O glorious Patriarch, St. Joseph, assist us by thy powerful mediation, and offer, by the hands of Mary, our prayers to Jesus. Amen.

Prayer to the Holy Family Holy-family

Domine Iesu Christe, qui Mariae et Ioseph subditus, domesticam vitam ineffabilibus virtutibus consecrasti: fac nos, utriusque auxilio, Familiae sanctae tuae exemplis instrui et consortium consequi sempiternum: Qui vivis et regnas in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, Who, being made subject to Mary and Joseph, didst consecrate domestic life by Thine ineffable virtues; grant that we, with the assistance of both, may be taught by the example of Thy Holy Family and may attain to its everlasting fellowship. Who livest and reignest forever. Amen.

~~~
Consecration to the Holy Family
O Jesus, ouholyfamily-2r most loving Redeemer, who having come to enlighten the world with Thy teaching and example, didst will to pass the greater part of Thy life in humility and subjection to Mary and Joseph in the poor home of Nazareth, thus sanctifying the Family that was to be an example for all Christian families, graciously receive our family as it dedicates and consecrates itself to Thee this day. Do Thou protect us, guard us and establish amongst us Thy holy fear, true peace and concord in Christian love: in order that by living according to the divine pattern of Thy family we may be able, all of us without exception, to attain to eternal happiness.
Mary, dear Mother of Jesus and Mother of us, by the kindly intercession make this our humble offering acceptable in the sight of Jesus, and obtain for us His graces and blessings.
O Saint Joseph, most holy Guardian of Jesus and Mary, help us by thy prayers in all our spiritual and temporal needs; that so we may be enabled to praise our divine Savior Jesus, together with Mary and thee, for all eternity. Amen.
Say an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory be three times.
Mother Teresa’s Prayer for Families
Heavenly Father, you have given us the model of life in the Holy Family of Nazareth.  Help us, O Loving Father,to make our family another Nazareth where love, peace and joy reign.
May it be deeply contemplative, intensely Eucharistic, revived with joy.  Help us to stay together in joy and sorrow in family prayer.
Teach us to see Jesus in the members of our families, especially in their distressing disguise.
May the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus make our hearts humble like his and help us to carry out our family duties in a holy way.
May we love one another as God loves each one of us, more and more each day, and forgive each other's faults as you forgive our sins.
Help us, O Loving Father, to take whatever you give and give whatever you take with a big smile.
Immaculate Heart of Mary, cause of our joy, pray for us.
St. Joseph, pray for us.
Holy Guardian Angels, be always with us, guide and protect us.
Amen.
“The Holy Family is the icon of the domestic church called to pray together. The family is the domestic church and must be the first school of prayer. If one does not learn to pray in the family, it will be difficult to fill this void, so I want to invite you to rediscover the beauty of praying together as a family in the school of the Holy Family of Nazareth and, in that way, to become truly one heart and one soul, a true family.” ~Pope Benedict XVI
2013 Patron Saints
On the occasion of the New Year 1935 Saint Maria Faustina made this entry in her spiritual Diary:  "Jesus likes to intervene in the smallest details of our life. And He often fulfills secret wishes of mine that I sometimes hide from Him, although I know that from Him nothing can be hidden. There is a custom among us of drawing by lot on New Year's Day, special patrons for ourselves for the whole year...”
~ Saint Maria Faustina
We are trying to get an early start on 2013.  Dad initiated the saint selection for the family’s patron saint for 2013.  Then each of us took a moment for prayer before we allowed a saint to select us as our personal patron saint for the year.*
We used the Saint’s Name Generator.
2013 Family Patron Saints
Here are our patron saints for 2013:
  • Family – St. Guy of Anderlecht – Feast: September 12
  • Dad – St. Paul the Apostle - Feast: June 29; January 25 (celebration of conversion)
  • Mom – St. Bernard Scammacca - Feast: February 16 (fitting since I am due with Baby G on Feb. 17)
  • Rose – St. George – Feast: April 23
  • Sparkles –  St. Charles Borromeo – November 5 (old) – November 4 (new)
  • Sweetie – St. Elizabeth Ann Seton – Feast: January 4
*Only those who receive or will receive Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist, selected a patron saint for the year.  The boys will focus on growing in devotion to their namesakes.
Thank you to all those who entered the giveaway, offered prayers, and/or words of encouragement.  To those that were unable to make a purchase, I completely understand that the non-essentials must be put on hold during times of need. Honestly, I wouldn't be able to make any purchases if I was not a consultant since being a consultant leads to some great deals and pay.
I held an online party earlier this month and made $62. It's not much but every bit helps. It broke down to about $31 per hour. (The hourly breakdown should increase once I get more familiar with inputting orders.) In addition, I earned $25 in product.  It’s been nice to get a jump start on organizing for the New Year.  It also comes in handy for gifts since I tend to get in more trouble by venturing into the brick and mortar stores.
In fact, I initially signed-up to get the consultant kit – $99 for over $300 worth of product.  My plan was to use the consultant set as gifts (13 items to be exact).  Instead, I fell in love with the items and found personal uses for the bags.
I have never held a physical party and do not intend to.  I have sold additional bags by word of mouth, using the bags on a daily basis, and online parties.  This opportunity has been simple with no pressure or real risk!
You are invited, anytime, to contact me for more info or sign-up to be a consultant.
The current consultant info is listed below.
HOLY INNOCENTS
Martyrs
Within the Octave of Christmas
DOUBLE, SECOND CLASS / PURPLE
There is mixed joy and sorrow in the feast of the innocent victims of the first persecution. The Church rejoices at the spiritual victory of the young witnesses to Christ. The purple vestments of the Mass denote the Church's common grief with the mothers of Bethlehem, who saw their babies massacred by the jealousy of Herod.
Triumph of the Innocents, by William Holman Hunt, 1883-4
While it is easy to get lost in the nightmare of what happened to the Innocents, it's to be remembered that they ultimately triumphed! They are Saints of God, as this painting by William Holman Hunt shows. The Innocents are seen with the Holy Family, in spirit, during the Family's Flight to Egypt. ~ Fisheaters
RESOURCES:
Let us pray. O Lord Jesus Christ, once You embraced and placed Your hands upon the little children who came to You, and said: "Suffer the little children to come unto Me, and forbid them not, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven, and their angels always see the face of my Father!" Look now with fatherly eyes on the innocence of these children and their parents' devotion, and bless them this day through our ministry. (The father signs the forehead of each child with the sign of the cross.) In Your grace and goodness let them advance continually, longing for You, loving You, fearing You, keeping Your commandments. Then they will surely come to their destined home, through You, Savior of the world. Who lives and reigns forever and ever. ~ Blessing of Children on Holy Innocents
Our happiness is found in Him, alone.  Dad and I give thanks for the stripping that He has allowed. We have been freed to seek Him first with limited attachments.  This year was no different, we had no budget for gifts.  Our eyes were solely on Him.  All were joyful and ready to celebrate His birth with humble surroundings.
The good Lord was generous and blessed us through Dad’s parents.  They gave us cash during the week of Christmas.  It was enough to cover our monthly expenses and provide some modest gifts for the kids and loved ones.  DEO GRATIAS!
    Our Christmas photos were taken early this year with an impromptu trip to the park since our scheduled shoot didn’t work out. I was happy with the photos but a bit disappointed with the photo cards. I put it off for far too long then life happened and the Christmas cards almost got nixed. Dad encouraged me to get them done in the eleventh hour. I opted for a simple, less customized, inexpensive option – Costco 1hr photo. I paid $15 or 50 6x7.5 prints with sturdy silver-lined envelopes.
    The cards above are some of the outtakes from Shutterfly, before Dad made his way to the hospital.  The card below is a slightly modified version of my family’s Costco photo card.
    CHRIST in Christmas
    I’m participating in the Keeping Christ in Christmas Blog Carnival, hosted by Arma Dei/Equipping Catholic Families, Raising (& Teaching) Little Saints, Truly Rich Mom. We'll be sharing different ways, tips, stories and real-life experiences that will help us focus on Jesus as the Reason for the Christmas season. Please scroll down to the end of the post to see the list of carnival entries.
    greatest-nativity
    Keeping our eyes on Christ is my family’s daily goal.  During Advent it becomes even more important for us to work on keeping Christ in Christmas.
    Our primary objective for keeping Christ in Christmas is to observe each liturgical season in it’s entirety.
    Here are a few examples on how we try to keep the focus on Him during Advent & Christmas.
    ~~~

    The focus of Advent is preparation for the coming of the Lord -- both in commemoration of His Nativity and His coming again at the end of time… The Christmas season does not begin until the first Mass at Christmas Eve, and doesn't end liturgically until the Octave of the Epiphany on January 14. It goes on in the spiritual sense until Candlemas on February 2, when all celebrations of Christ's Childhood give way to Septuagesima and Lent.

    Sole focus is on preparing our hearts for Jesus.

        • Simple practices that help us keep this a penitential season.
        • Limited celebratory events.  No extracurriculars.  Similar to our Lenten practices
        • Advent List, Christkindl, Jesse Tree, Christmas, Novena, and more.
        • We take a mock pilgrimage, Journey to BethlehemJourney To Bethlehem is an interactive walking tour from the recreated town of Nazareth to Bethlehem.  The journey Gloria Holy Reflectionsrecreates the events that happened on the evening of Christ's birth.
        • Decorations are focused on Christ, only.  Nativities are the primary décor.  The lights must wait for Christmas.
        • Christmas music is limited (to the best of our ability) until Christmas day.
        • Gift giving is not emphasized.  That means no wish lists or presents stuffed under the tree.  Instead, acts of charity are discussed and encouraged.
            • Absolutely no Santa Claus.
        • All family members receive the sacrament of Confession during the Third and Fourth Sunday of Advent.
        • All family members present their hearts (gifts) during the Third and Fourth Sunday of Advent.  This is done by way of Adoration.  Each leaves a wooden heart at the nativity manager in Church.  The heart symbolizes their offering for Jesus. Our hearts are with Christ at His time of birth.  The hearts are picked up during the Christmas season and placed on the family altar as a reminder of our offering.

    40 days after giving birth, Mary goes to the Temple to be purified and to "redeem" Jesus per the Old Testament Law of the firstborn. Christmas truly ends as a Season with Candlemas and the beginning of Septuagesima.

        • Put a small offering of gifts under the tree for the children on Christmas Eve.
        • Visit Our Lord and Savior at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass on Christmas Day.14820268-brussels--june-24-nativity-paint-on-the-wood-from-saint-antoine-church-on-march-2012-in-brussels
          • We visit Him before we ever turn towards a present. No opening any gifts on Christmas eve or Christmas morning – CHRIST IS FIRST!
        • Have a birthday party for Jesus on Christmas morning.
          • Happy birthday, cake, and the works.
        • Keep the Christmas decor up for the entire span of the Christmas season.  (Many think we’re nuts or lazy but it’s done all for His glory!)
        • REJOICE!!! Sing and play Christmas music all season!
        • Increase daily Mass attendance.

    It is, that, from the day itself of our Saviour's Birth even to the day of our Lady's Purification, there is, in the Calendar,an extraordinary richness of Saints' Feasts, doing homage to the master feast of Bethlehem, and clustering in adoring love round the Crib of the Infant-God. ~ "The Mystery of Christmas" from Dom Gueranger's "The Liturgical Year"

    Solemn Rorate Mass

    Solemn Rorate Mass from December 15th, 2012, at St. Stephen the First Martyr Parish. The Rorate Mass is a special votive mass for Our Lady during Advent, traditionally celebrated by candlelight in the early morning. St. Stephen's is a parish run by the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter.

    The piece is "Gabriel's Message," a traditional Basque Advent carol, sung by the Choir and Choristers of St. Stephen the First Martyr Parish on the album "The Little Road to Bethlehem.”

    This video was created by a talented parishioner, Jennifer Rego.

    EROCRAS

    The seven "O Antiphons" (also called the "Greater Antiphons" or "Major Antiphons") are prayers that come from the Breviary's Vespers during the Octave before Christmas Eve, a time which is called the "Golden Nights."
    Each Antiphon begins with "O" and addresses Jesus with a unique title which comes from the prophecies of Isaias and Micheas (Micah), and whose initials, when read backwards, form an acrostic for the Latin "Ero Cras" which means "Tomorrow I come."
